"This must be Thursday. I never could get the hang of Thursday."
- Douglas Adams (via Arthur Dent)
Welcome to Thoroughly Thursday - "No GoT Spoilers Please" edition. I feel like society decided Monday morning that if you hadn't caught up with Game of Thrones by this weekend, you were screwed in the spoiler department. Seriously, New York Times?
What I'm Reading - Al Franken, Giant of the Senate. I realize that Senator Franken's politics are not for everyone, but I really appreciate a politician presenting their commitment to public service in a way that doesn't sound like some strange rip-off of a pharmaceutical commercial. Also, the dude is funny, which helps.
What I'm listening to - No Surprises by Luca Bloom. This is a beautiful, spare cover of the Radioheadsong from OK Computer which I remember listening to with Ellen and Irwin at their apartment in graduate school 20yrs ago (golly, I'm getting old). The Financial Times's radio program Life of a Song did an episode recently about how influential No Surprises has been since its release.
What I'm Promoting - This week I would like to give a shout out to DTG project manager Gary Rolin who has started a new podcast this week called "Superman's Other Pals". In each podcast episode, Gary reads through an issue of Silver-era comic book "Superman's Pal Jimmie Olsen" with his teenage daughter Ella Plum (who has one of the best laughs ever). Each episode includes lively and hilarious discussions on such topics as the strange "Jimmy-Olsen-omniscience" of Superman, job prospects for 1950s teen boys, and the strange world of comic book advertisements. I had a chance to listen to a couple of episodes and I think you'll love this modern peek into comic yesteryear. You can find Episode 1 here, here and here.
What I'm thinking about - "You cannot truly listen to anyone and do anything else at the same time." - M. Scott Peck
What I'm thinking about (pt. 2) - What I'm actually doing when "listening" to someone:
- typing emails
- folding laundry
- parking my car
- making lunches
- trying to find my keys
- looking at my phone
- doing dishes
What I'm Doing (for work) - Interviewing cool people. I've mentioned a few times that my friend Julie Winkle Giulioni is going to be giving a presenting a free webinar on September 12th, Noon Pacific. We had the opportunity to interview her for the Digital Training podcast about why she decided to create this presentation, why she thinks mindfulness is a necessary skill for today's workplace, and what participants can hope to learn during the event. Additionally, we talk about her dog, Pixel, and Gary shares his history of canine heroics. The episode is about 12min long, but you can also read some of her articles on the subject here, here and here.
Again, you can sign up for the webinar here.
All the best, and remember, it's almost Labor Day weekend. :)
P.S. As most of you probably know, Hurricane Harvey has devastated Houston. However, like Katrina, the real test is going to be in the coming months as residents try to reclaim their lives and rebuild their city. If you are interested in donating to relief efforts, here is a list of local and national organizations involved in the recovery efforts.
